JOSHUA: Israel Inherits the Land
Eighty eight children joined us this year for VBS 2016. This is a significant increase from last year, for which we are thankful. We studied the life Joshua, with our key verse being Joshua 1:9. The VBS players opened each morning with a skit to dramatize the day’s lesson, and this year many young assistants were chosen from the audience to participate in the action. There was no shortage of volunteers to help destroy the walls of Jericho, and we were all amazed when the Jordan River parted by itself right there on stage. As always, the closing program included songs which the children had learned during the week. An original adaptation of “Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho” with its jazz piano accompaniment made for lively singing. An encore presentation of “Behold What Manner of Love” was enjoyed by the congregation the following Sunday.
It is always rewarding to receive feedback from the children about what they learned. Some comments included:
“My sin will find me out.”
“I learned that I should be strong and courageous.”
“Sin and what God thinks about it.”
“I learned how God blesses those who are obedient to Him.”
“Most of all, you should always trust in the Lord, for He will never forsake us and He always will help when we need it.”
And simply put, from a first grader, “Do not sin.”
Once again, many thanks to all who participated in this wonderful time of serving. DVD’s of the closing program are available from the Media Ministry.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2015
Approximately 70 children joined us this year for VBS 2015. We studied the life of Elijah and saw over and over again God’s faithfulness in the life of this mighty prophet. The VBS players were better than ever as they opened each morning with a skit to reinforce the day’s lesson, aided by some amazing audiovisual effects. (Remember “Chariots of Fire”?)
As always, the children were very attentive and demonstrated a good understanding of what was being taught. Especially noteworthy was the performance of the 2nd and 3rd grade class during Quiztron, a game played at the end of the week in which the children buzz in answers to questions from the lessons. The score was neck and neck throughout the whole game, so the sudden death tiebreaker question was for the 2 teams to go back and forth naming a minor prophet until one team missed, which was a real challenge because this was not even covered in the lessons. Amazingly, the teams tied even on that, because both teams knew all the minor prophets! (So ask yourself, as you smarter than a third grader?)
It’s always rewarding to read the children’s comments on what they learned. Some of their replies included:
“I learned about God’s power and grace.”
“I learned that Elijah proved that God is the one true God with the rain, widow, fire, etc.”
“I learned that I can trust God and He can do all things.”
“I learned about Elijah. God is sovereign. There are consequences for evil deeds.”
“God’s great power can do anything.”
“I learned about how Jezebel and Ahab did evil deeds and how Elijah trusted the Lord and obeyed Him. The Lord showed His power in this story!”
Once again, the Lord prepared fertile soil in the hearts of these children to receive His Word. Many thanks to all who had a part in this wonderful time of serving. As always, DVDs of the closing program are available from the media ministry.
